Isle of Wight Academy fought off a dogged Broadwater Academy team but eventually closed out the Vikings by a score of 73-61 at home on Tuesday.

IWA led Broadwater 51-43 after three quarters, but the Vikings took the lead three times in the fourth quarter after running off nine straight points to start the period.

The visitors closed to within a point, 62-61, on a Patrick Hennessey field goal with 1:56 left in the game. But IWA responded well, running off the game’s last 11 points in the final 1:40.

Junior Rainer Marfio was 3-for-4 from the foul line in that stretch, and classmate Nathan Sivertson converted on a crowd-pleasing dunk and the ensuing foul shot with 23.5 seconds left. Marfio finished with 19 points, Sivertson with 24.

Broadwater (6-14, 3-10 in the Metro Athletic Conference) was led by Michael Riopel with 18 points and Hennessey with 17.

IWA is 15-6, 10-4 going into Tuesday night’s non-conference matchup with Northeast Academy of Lasker, N.C., at Jester Gymnasium.

In other IWA action, the Chargers succumbed to Williamsburg Christian, 73-28, at home on Friday.

Juniors Ben Epps and Josh Thomas led IWA with six points each. Deron Powers, the second-leading scorer in the Metro Athletic Conference coming into the game, led all players with 23 points, including four three-pointers. Powers was scoreless in the first quarter, but exploded for 11 points in the second and had 12 in the third before sitting down.

IWA struggled to find its scoring, hitting its first field goal midway through the second quarter and trailing 39-9 at the half. With mostly reserves on the floor, the Chargers outscored the Eagles 7-4 in the fourth quarter, but the damage already had been done.
