Driver dies after morning crash

The driver of a van died after a head-on collision with a school bus on Wednesday morning. No children were on the bus at the time.

Suffolk police on Wednesday continued to investigate a deadly crash that occurred just after 9 a.m. Wednesday morning on U.S. Route 58.

Suffolk resident Fredrick Michael Adkins, 54, died in the crash.

Police received emergency calls about the accident at 9:07 a.m. Investigation found that the van had been traveling eastbound on Route 58 when it crossed over the median and hit the school bus head-on in the westbound lane, becoming wedged under the bus in the process.

No children were on the bus at the time of the accident on Route 58, and the driver of the bus was treated at the scene by Suffolk Fire and Rescue, according to a press release from the city.

All lanes of Route 58 opened after 3 p.m. The accident had many people stuck in traffic on Route 58 for hours.
