Ellen H. Stetson (“Betty”) died on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012. She was the daughter of the late William B. Hayes and Anne G. Hayes, of Lewiston, Maine. Her late husband, Dr. Lawrence J. Stetson, was the first radiologist at Louise Obici Memorial Hospital when the hospital opened in 1951.

Mrs. Stetson is survived by her daughter, Denys S. Creighton, of Richmond, Va., and her son, Lawrence J. Stetson Jr. and wife, Lynn, of Tacoma, Wash. Her grandchildren are Adam B. Crawford, of Charleston, S.C.; Samantha C. Miller, of Hingham, Mass.; Tiffany Stetson-Barker, of Gig Harbor, Wash., and Lindsay S. Thompson, of Costa Mesa, Calif., as well as three great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Stetson attended Lasell College and the Chamberlain School of Design. Betty was an active person who most enjoyed taking care of her yard. She was proud of learning to use her John Deere riding mower. An expert seamstress, she was always busy with decorating projects.

A private ceremony in celebration of her life has been held. As a breast cancer survivor of 30 years, Betty would like any remembrance to be sent to the American Cancer Society. Her recent illness was due to another type of cancer. R.W. Baker & Co Funeral Home, 509 West Washington Street, Suffolk, VA 23434 is serving the family. Condolences may be made at www.rwbakerfh.com.
