Phillip Long took this landscape photo of a river house and earned a first-place award in the first Suffolk Living amateur photo contest.

We asked for your participation, and boy did you respond.

Although things looked bleak for a while — with only one entry in our office in the weeks leading up to the deadline to enter our first Suffolk Living amateur photo contest — during the final days, the entries poured in.

By the time it was all over, we had received almost 200 entries. There was a dazzling array of photos entered in the four divisions, impressing the judges with the photographers’ vision and talent.

Judging the contest were Suffolk Publications editor Res Spears and designer Troy Cooper, along with Brenda Wright, owner of Shooting Star Gallery on North Main Street and an artist with a camera.

The judges chose one winner and up to two honorable mentions in each of the categories. Those photos will be published in the January/February edition of Suffolk Living, which is set to hit the streets by Jan. 24.

Winners are as follows:

Action — Vincent Wright, first place; and Cindy Baker, honorable mention

Architecture — Phillip Long, first place; and Mike Byrum, honorable mention

Outdoors — Phillip Long, first place; and Erin O’Grady and Ryan Spruiell, honorable mention

People — Beth Chabot, first place; and Mike Byrum, honorable mention

A fifth category, Home Interiors and Exteriors, did not receive enough entries for a winner to be chosen.
