A youth that drowned Monday night in a millpond off the shore of Jasmine Lane has been identified as 17-year-old William Summerlin of Norfolk.

At 4:26 p.m. Monday evening, police and fire units received a call that aid was needed in the 3000 block of Jasmine Lane, off of U.S. Route 58. Two 14-year-olds reported that they had been swimming with Summerlin when he complained of fatigue and began to struggle.

The 14-year-olds, both residents of nearby South Quay Road, attempted to assist Summerlin, but were unable to do so. Approximately three hours later, his body was recovered roughly 117 feet from the shore.

Members of the Suffolk police and fire departments, including both dive teams, search and rescue units responded to the scene. They were also assisted by members of the Carrsville and Holland fire departments and Franklin’s fire and rescue units in the effort, Lt. Debbie George said in a statement.

Summerlin had been visiting relatives in the city when the incident occurred.
