William C. Giermak, chief executive officer of Obici Health System, resigned Wednesday after 15 years at the facility’s helm.

According to a press release issued by the hospital, Chet Hart Jr. will serve as acting chief executive officer pending the appointment of an interim chief executive officer. A nationwide search will be undertaken immediately for a permanent replacement.

&uot;The Board appreciates Mr. Giermak’s many years of dedicated service and the advancements under his leadership,&uot; the press release stated.

Giermak said from his home Wednesday afternoon that the board just felt it was time for a change in leadership.

&uot;I still feel the hospital is headed in the right direction, but the board feels a change is needed in the type of leadership with the direction they want to head in,&uot; he said. &uot;I have nothing but the highest regard for the board, the medical staff and the people who work at the hospital.&uot;

During Giermak’s stint with Obici, he directed the expansion of services and staff as well as the construction of the new $60 million Obici Hospital on Godwin Boulevard that opened its doors in 2002. He said he has no immediate plans.

In remarks last week before the Suffolk Rotary Club, Giermak said that cash flow shortages and red ink associated with the new facility are now behind Obici and that the hospital was expected to finish the current year in the black with admissions at a record level.

Board Chairman Sam Glasscock declined to comment on Giermak’s departure.
