Jason Brown scored two touchdowns and Joel Rivera rushed for 76 yards, all in the second half, as Nansemond River (NR) roared to a 35-0 defeat of visiting King’s Fork (KF) on Friday night, making it the third season in a row that the Warriors have dominated intra-Suffolk competition. The Bulldogs were held to four first downs.

With five minutes left in the first quarter, a snap went over KF punter Joey Powell’s head, and the Warriors recovered at the KF 9. Brown carried over the goal line two plays later.

Neither team threatened for the next 12 minutes, and Brown ran six yards to the NR 31 with 5:05 left in the half. On second down, Terry Bullock faded back, and was chased toward the left sideline. As three defenders closed in, Bullock appeared to be heading out of bounds.

Suddenly, he reared back, and hit a wide-open Darryl Freeney at midfield. One defender stood between Freeney and the goal line, and Jerome Burgess took him out. Freeney bolted down the left sideline, and didn’t stop until he’d scored for a 14-0 halftime advantage.

Brown opened the second half for his team by charging 21 yards to the KF 39, and Rivera took over, making it to the 31. A holding penalty knocked the Warriors back to the 44, but Rivera made six yards on the next play, and scurried 29 around the left end down to the nine. Brown rumbled through the middle for the score on the next play.

Rivera started off the next drive with 19 yards in two plays, and Brown churned out 11 over the next two to reach the KF 23 with 8:43 to go. Bullock took a shotgun snap and hesitated, then shot up the middle and toward the right sideline for the score. Eric Chamberlain ended the scoring and the game with a 15-yard rush with nine seconds left.

The Warriors host Indian River next Friday, while the Bulldogs host Great Bridge.

Over at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, the Saints fell to Christchurch, 28-9. Brock Van Selow scored the lone touchdown on a two-yard dive, and Ryland Gwaltney kicked a field goal. The Saints now visit St. Anne’s Belfield and Norfolk Academy before returning home Oct. 22 to face Greenbrier Christian Academy.
