Chest fundraiser kicks off

Those who will attempt to solicit $41,650 for the Suffolk Community Chest kicked off the two-week fundraising efforts Monday morning, after hearing kickoff pep talks for Lt. Gov. Mills Godwin, chest president William Davis and drive chairman Walter Story. It is the responsibility of all good citizens to participate in the efforts, Godwin said. If the conscience of the community is to be touched, you people must bring it about.

Davidson back from fishing trip

Charles Davidson, zone manager with International Harvester Co., returned last week from Panama City, Fla., where he was a guest of the company on a deep seas fishing trip in the Gulf of Mexico. Davidson was one of 12 men in the southern region to be entertained. He had sold 114 percent of his quota in a national sales campaign. Earlier this year, he was presented a trophy for selling more diesel tractors than any other member in the organization.

Photography class to be

taught at Birdsong

The Suffolk Recreation Department is introducing a new activity to the Suffolk area in starting a photography class. The class will meet at 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays starting Oct. 17, and will last for 10 weeks. It is to be conducted in the Birdsong Recreation Center, and the instructor will be W.E.A. Moore, local photographer. The class is designed for the amateur photographer, with or without experience. Interested persons may contact the Recreation office.

Whaleyville Ruritans elected new officers

The Whaleyville Ruritan Club recently met in the fellowship hall of the Whaleyville Methodist Church with president George Bryan presiding. W.W. Jakeman, chairman of the nominating committee, presented the new slate of activities. They are C.T. Davis, president, John Baggett, vice president, Robert Gwaltney, secretary, Rawles Privott, treasurer, J.R. Beale, sgt. at arms, and Edgar Knight, director. Floyd Baines and G.C. Barnton were welcomed back into the club after a leave of absence.
