For more than 40 years, the Suffolk Kiwanis Club has been selling peanuts to raise money so that it can fund its many community service projects.

The current package consists of three cans of delicious, nutritious Planters Peanuts products. There are Cocktail Peanuts, Sweet Honey Roasted peanuts and cashews, and Mixed Nuts.

Kiwanis member Harry Leggett recalls that

&uot;Back in the early 60’s we met at Bill Harrell’s Electric business on West Washington St. where we actually bought a barrel of roasted peanuts and poured them by hand into three-pound tins.

&uot;We used an old pair of scales to be sure they were filled, and then sealed them individually.&uot;

In those days, most of the tins were shipped out of town, many across the country.

Today, members of the Suffolk club distribute the freshly produced Planters products to buyers throughout Hampton Roads. With the proceeds, the club is able to fund its local charities and service projects, most of which are aimed directly at improving the lives of youth.

Kiwanis targets everyone from prenatal to college age. Service clubs are sponsored at Forest Glen and Kings Fork middle schools, and Lakeland and Kings Fork high schools. Four scholarships are funded every year, and such groups as the Homeless Shelter and the Salvation Army receive donations.

The members supply manpower to the Salvation Army for ringing the bells for Christmas donations and they cook and serve 300 to 700

walkers at the annual March of Dimes walkathon.

The sleeves of three cans are available for just $7, and can be obtained from any Kiwanis member, or at Major Signs, the Suffolk News Herald Office, all Suffolk BB&T locations, Suffolk Insurance, Essex Bank, and PC Solutions.
