CHESAPEAKE — Both King’s Fork swimming teams got their first victories of the season with a sweep over city rival Lakeland, with KF winning the boys meet 91-50 and the Lady Bulldogs winning 120-48, Saturday at the Great Bridge Swim and Racket Club.
With the Cavalier squads in their inaugural year as a swimming program, the Bulldogs no longer are the newest squads in the Southeastern District.
Led by junior Lizzy Kuhn and sophomore Samantha Barbour winning two individual races apiece, the Lady Bulldogs won 10 of the 11 events in the meet.
Sophomore Kyle Corbett won a pair of events for the Bulldogs while Gregory Epps won two races for Lakeland.
“Both teams have been far more competitive this year, the girls a little more than the boys,” said King’s Fork head coach Katie Curran.
“We’re making progress. Everyone’s dropping time in all of their events all the time. Everyone’s working hard and it’s showing,” Curran said.
King’s Fork opened the meet winning both medley relays, with the boys foursome being Cody Holland, Nick Nielsen, Hunter Lowe and Corbett, then the Lady Bulldog team of Kuhn, Nicole Tsetsilas, Julia Moretz and Barbour.
Corbett won the 200-meter freestyle, just a few minutes later, in 2:52.48 and claimed the 100 free in 1:14.99.
Holland won the 100 backstroke in 1:39.25, cutting nine seconds off his personal best, and he was just one example of Bulldog and Cavalier swimmers improving by impressive margins as the season goes along.
“It shows the kids are practicing harder and getting more in shape from the beginning of the season until now,” Curran said. “Our practices aren’t really changing that much, it’s just that they’re in better shape and that makes it easier for them to drop time.”
For the Cavs, Epps followed up winning the 100 butterfly against Indian River Thursday by doing the same in 1:29.35 on Saturday. Epps also won the 100 breaststroke in 1:32.48.
Austyn Chappell won the 50 free in 39.43 for Lakeland’s lone event win on the girls side.
Kuhn won the two long freestyle races for the Lady Bulldogs, winning the 200 in 2:55.66 and the 400 in 6:04.02.
Barbour won the 100 butterfly in 1:19.42 and the 100 free in 1:14.55.
It was the first win of the season for both King’s Fork teams, but the Lady Bulldogs will at least split the city crown thanks to tying Nansemond River earlier this season.
