Editor, the News-Herald:

As we prepare to celebrate the Christmas season, the American Red Cross would like to say &uot;thank you&uot; to everyone whose contribution of time, money or blood has helped us help others in their time of need.

The Suffolk Chapter would like to give thanks to our volunteers who so generously give their time, energy and spirit and to our financial donors who enable us to effectively carry out our mission to provide relief to victims of disasters and help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.

As the Financial Development Coordinator for the American Red Cross Suffolk Chapter, I have the opportunity to witness the strength of the human spirit every day.

I see it in the actions of the numerous volunteers who work alongside American Red Cross staff when we need their help the most.

I see it in the face of volunteers and staff who put in countless hours when a disaster occurs.

I see it in the faces of victims of disaster when a Red Cross worker lends them a helping hand.

I see it in the dedication of health and safety instructors teaching infant CPR to new parents.

I hear it in the voices of concerned blood donors who come in to donate life-saving blood.

This generosity helps us be the Red Cross, an agency that is always there when people’s lives that that unexpected turn.

This year the Suffolk Chapter has assisted 32 families who were personally affected by residential fires or disasters.

We have also taught life-saving skills such as CPR, first aid and water safety.

This would not have been possible without the contributions of thousands of Suffolk citizens who’ve helped the Red Cross make a difference in our community.

On behalf of all who have benefited from the compassionate citizens of Suffolk, please accept my heartfelt appreciation.
