Marquette sophomore Davante Gardner (King’s Fork) made his first collegiate start as the No. 11 Golden Eagles had no problem with Wisconsin-Green Bay, getting a 79-61 win, in Milwaukee on Saturday.

Gardner, a 6-foot-8 power forward, made 6-of-11 field goal attempts and scored 14 points. Gardner added seven boards and four steals.

Marquette (9-0) jumped out to a 15-4 lead and led all the way.

Marquette hosts Northern Colorado on Saturday at 3 p.m.

 

Georgetown’s women’s basketball team won its eighth straight game with a 59-50 win against George Washington on Sunday.

Junior TaShauna Rodgers (King’s Fork) led the Lady Hoyas with 18 points, along with six steals and four rebounds.

George Washington led the Lady Hoyas 47-46 with 5:22 remaining before GU pulled away in the last couple minutes.

Rodgers is averaging 16.5 points and 2.7 steals per game.

The Lady Hoyas (9-2) host Miami (Fla.) next Wednesday.

 

Two former Lakeland field hockey players made the 2011 VaSID (Virginia Sports Information Directors) University Division All-State Field Hockey Team.

Old Dominion freshman midfielder Kelsey Smither was selected the Rookie of the Year and to the First Team.

Smither led the Lady Monarchs with 13 assists. ODU (22-3) reached the NCAA national semifinals after winning the Colonial Athletic Association season and tournament championships.

Radford senior defender Lynsey Daughtrey became the first Lady Highlander to make First Team All-State finishing a collegiate career in which she started all 82 matches in four seasons.

Daughtrey scored five goals and played all but five minutes of game time this season. Her 19 career assists is fourth-place in RU history.

 

Wayne State gave Winston-Salem State its first and only loss of the football season with a 21-14 result in the NCAA Div. II semifinals on Saturday at WSSU.

“We have nothing to hang our heads about. We came up short. When you play great games against great teams the little things make the difference,” said WSSU head coach Cornell Maynor.

The Rams (13-1) set a new record for wins by a Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) program. WSSU won the national championship in the Boxtorow HBCU Media Poll finishing ahead of No. 2 Norfolk State.

Junior wide receiver Darryl Freeney (Nansemond River) caught two touchdown passes on the season for the Rams.
