Suffolk at Windsor

Suffolk High’s basketeers suffered their first setback of the young Peanut district season Tuesday, Raiders can regain first place tonight by beating Windsor.

The direct result of that 93-71 loss to Franklin was a tie for first between Suffolk and Windsor. Accordingly, the winner tonight will take over the district lead.

In other games tonight, Central is at John Yeates, Forest Glen at Southampton, Smithfield at Franklin, and Northampton at Gloucester.

Suffolk is likely to meet up with some stiff opposition at Windsor. The Dukes have won their last five games after an opening loss to Franklin and have the added advantage of playing at home.

Moses A. Riddick Jr., a

three-term Cypress District Supervisor, indicted today he is somewhat disappointed following the election of D.J. Mangum Jr., to the post of chairman of the board Thursday night.

Mangum is one of three newly elected supervisors who now constitute a majority of the five-member board. Riddick, who has served on the board since 1961, said he felt his experience would mean much to county progress.

Riddick said, however, he was encouraged by a resolution passed by the group that requires election of a chairman each year.

&uot;Although we have made much progress,&uot; Riddick remarked, &uot;we have not yet developed to the point of overcoming skin color in elevating people to the position of chairman.

Although most of last night’s Suffolk City Council business was routine, the meeting itself frequently proved stormy and ludicrous.

The first jolt of the evening came when the resolution was read, granting a conditional use permit to Dr. George H. Barnett for the construction of a five-unit townhouse apartment complex on Henry Street.

Although City Council seemed as if they were moving toward a favorable decision on the matter, Councilman E. C. Ferguson Jr., noted that the resolution seemed to him improperly worded, naming George H. Barnett as the property owner, when in fact the El-Bar Corp. owns the property, with George H. Barnett as its president, Mayor James F. Hope concurred.

After a brief discussion as to whether or not it should be reworded, Vice-Mayor Barnett asked to have the floor: &uot;I’d like to withdraw the request gentlemen. Appreciating the feelings of the citizens on Henry Street, who objected, I feel like its wording tends to suggest that something special is being done for me, and I feel this puts my fellow Councilmen on the spot. Were I not a member of Council things might be different.&uot;

Suffolk Attorney

speaks to Ruritans

Jeff L. Gardy, Suffolk attorney, was the guest speaker at the regular monthly meeting of the Whaleyville Ruritan Club held Monday evening at the William J. Jones School cafeteria.

The ladies of the Eastern Star served the dinner.

J. C. Russell Jr., president, welcomed the group. Larry Felton and Ray Ward were guests of the club.

J. Marshall Harrell led the group in singing &uot;America&uot; and the Rev. Thomas M. Mishoe gave the invocation.

Secretary B. L. Riddick Jr., gave the secretary’s report and Treasurer M. Edward Harrell gave his report.
