St. Augustine’s senior Christopher Copeland (Lakeland) started his indoor track and field season in outstanding form, winning the high jump competition with a personal best in the process at the CNU Holiday Open at Christopher Newport on Saturday.

Copeland cleared the bar at 7-feet-1.75, an inch and a quarter better than his previous indoor best, which was his mark to win the 2010 NCAA Division II Indoor national championship.

More former Suffolk track and field standouts did well at CNU.

St. Augustine’s freshman Jaquan Demiel (Lakeland) placed 10th in the long jump, with a mark of 21-feet-5.25 in his first collegiate meet.

Virginia Wesleyan freshman Shakiella Daniel (Lakeland) set a new Marlin program record in her first meet as a Marlin. Daniel placed 17th in the 400-meter dash in 1:01.94 for the school record and the second-best time for a Div. III athlete in the meet.

For Norfolk State, sophomore Ian Copeland (King’s Fork) was sixth in the weight throw with a distance of 47-feet-10.5 and junior James Taylor (Nansemond River) was eighth in the 600 in 1:24.63.

Virginia Union freshman Deion Dickens(King’s Fork) was 10th in the 400 in 51.26 and on VUU’s 4×400 relay team, which finished seventh in his first collegiate competition.

 

Georgetown junior Sugar Rodgers (King’s Fork) poured in 28 points, scoring 21 of them in the second half, as the Lady Hoyas opened their Big East schedule with an 82-54 win at Pittsburgh on Tuesday. Rodgers added five steals and four assists.

Georgetown (8-2, 1-0) hosts George Washington Sunday at 2 p.m.

After a three-point loss at Barton earlier this season, Chowan beat Barton 62-59 on Tuesday in Murfreesboro, N.C.

Senior guard Ransheda Jennings(King’s Fork) made a lay-up with less than 50 seconds remaining to give the Lady Hawks a 60-59 lead. Jennings finished with 16 points, nine rebounds and three assists.

Chowan (3-5) plays at UNC-Pembroke on Wednesday. CU has two games left before heading into 18 straight CIAA conference games.

 

No. 11 Marquette (8-0) edged Washington 79-77 in Madison Square Garden as the nightcap of the Jimmy V Classic Tuesday night.

Sophomore Davante Gardner had six points and three rebounds for Marquette. Gardner’s averaging 7.1 points in 14.0 minutes per game on the season.

Marquette hosts Wisconsin-Green Bay on Saturday.
