Former Warrior wins Big South honor

Winthrop guard Andre Jones (Nansemond River) earned the Big South Player of the Week award for his two games as the Eagles went 1-1 in conference play last week.
Jones hit a three-pointer for the winning points in a 59-56 Winthrop win at Presbyterian on Thursday. Jones, a 6-foot-2 senior, scored 24 points against the Blue Hose. He followed up with 25 points against Gardner-Webb on Saturday as the Eagles lost 62-60 to the Bulldogs.
Jones, at 18.6 points per game, is second in scoring in the Big South on the season. He’s 75 points away from reaching 1,000 career points.
Winthrop (2-6, 1-1) hosts Virginia-Wise on Sunday.
No. 16-ranked Marquette beat in-state rival No. 9 Wisconsin 61-54 on Saturday at Wisconsin’s Kohl Arena in Madison.
Sophomore forward Davante Gardner (King’s Fork) tallied eight points and seven boards in 14 minutes for the Golden Eagles (7-0).
Wisconsin beat Marquette in the last two meetings. Marquette played Washington in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden Tuesday night.
Old Dominion’s men’s basketball team opened Colonial Athletic Association play with a 69-59 win at Northeastern on Saturday.
ODU forward Nick Wright (Nansemond River) scored 13 points and added three rebounds.
The Monarchs (5-3, 1-0) return to New England to face Fairfield on Friday evening.
During the first MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) basketball action of the season, South Carolina State beat host Norfolk State 75-69 in a women’s game Monday at Echols Hall.
SCSU guard Trinese Fox (Nansemond River) scored 10 points as the Lady Bulldogs went to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in conference.
NSU’s men’s squad started MEAC play with back-to-back wins, edging Savannah State 60-58 on Saturday and beat SCSU 82-67 on Monday. Junior guard Kris Brown (Lakeland) played in both games for the Spartans (6-3, 2-0).
NSU rebounded to start MEAC play well despite a 69-57 loss to Div. II Elizabeth City State last Tuesday in Norfolk.
Senior guard Marquie Cooke (Nansemond River) led the Vikings with 18 points, four steals and three assists. ECSU is 5-2 overall.
Chowan (4-4) rolled over visiting Allen 82-58 on Saturday.
Hawk power forward Quinton McDuffie (Nansemond River) had 15 points and four rebounds and is averaging 14.6 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.
Winston-Salem State blitzed through the quarterfinals of the NCAA Div. II football playoffs with a 27-7 win over visiting New Haven on Saturday. WSSU is the first CIAA (Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) school to reach the national semifinals.
New Haven led 7-6 after a quarter. The Rams scored on a 12-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second quarter and went on to add two touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
Junior Darryl Freeney (Nansemond River) is a wide receiver for the Rams.
WSSU (13-0) hosts Wayne State of Detroit in a semifinal on Saturday. The winner goes to
the national championship in Florence, Ala. on Dec. 17.
