T.R. Jones elected United Fund head
Thomas R. Jones has been elected president of the Suffolk-Nansemond United Fund.
Jones, who was the drive chairman for the 1970 campaign, succeeds T.B. Knox at the helm of the organization for 1971.
Other officers elected by the board of directors for the new year are Knox, vice president; Bobby L. Ralph, secretary-treasurer; and Burke H. Howell, assistant secretary-treasurer.
New directors elected for three-year terms on the board of directors are C.R. Davis, Major T. Benton, T.J. LoCascio, Howell, Jack W. Nurney Jr., Dr. C.M. Colden, Horace Lancaster, Robert E. Parker Jr., Mrs. J.D. Rawles, Rev. C.J. Word, Godfrey W. Stancill and Knox.
The 1970 fund has ended officially, but a few gifts have continued to come in, pushing the total above 99 percent and very near the 100 percent mark, Jones said.
Those who may wish to have a contribution credited to the 1970 drive may contact Jones or the United Fund office at 539-2111.
Franklin remains district favorite
Even though Franklin got waylaid at Windsor a week or so back, the Broncos are still strong favorites to finish on top in the Peanut District Group AA basketball chase.
Accordingly, the big race at present is for second place, so far as Suffolk and Smithfield are concerned. These two upper echelon teams, now tied for second, clash Tuesday at Suffolk and the winner, of course, take undisputed possession of second.
Whichever takes the runner-up spot, there’s no assurance it will be permanent. The second half of the schedule is just under way, and each has some strong opposition to face.
Suffolk played at Forest Glen last night and as Suffolk is well aware, Forest Glen has won at home against the Raiders the past two years.
Two records help JY Girls
Forest Glen’s girls led at the half but lost to Smithfield Friday, 55-42. John Yeates girls led all the way and set a couple of schools records in a rout of Gloucester.
One of Yeates’ records was a team mark for most points in one game as the Charger sextet crushed Gloucester, 72-39. The old mark of 49 was set in the 1968 game with Gloucester.
The other record, most individual points in a single game, is shared by Dell Carson and Sandra Butler, who each scored 25 Friday. The old mark of 23 was shared by Carson and Chris Joyce.
Morolyn Jordan added 14 points in the game with Gloucester. Yeates was off to a 13-0 lead in the first quarter and was never headed.
