Students at Creekside Elementary School are looking to give back to their community this holiday season.

The Creekside Student Council Association is sponsoring a clothing drive to benefit Goodwill in Hampton Roads as its annual service project.

“Our main focus is community service,” said Doris Johnson, one of the SCA advisers at Creekside. “We try to help out with projects we have at the school and in the community.”

The clothing drive will take place on Dec. 8 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the school.

Johnson said Goodwill plans to park a truck outside of the school, and students, staff members, parents and other community members can donate any new or gently used clothes.

Any season and type of clothing will be accepted at the drive.

“We are encouraging the students to bring their clothes in,” she said. “We want the community to bring their things also.”

The SCA at Creekside is made up of approximately 40 students — one representative from each homeroom class.

Along with Johnson, Creekside staff members Melissa Zawodny, Caren O’Connor, Shea Wilde, Stephanie Wilkins and Shawn Harris also are SCA advisers.

Throughout the year, the group helps with school projects, like the plastic bag recycling campaign and a canned food collection.

The students also participate in their own service project, like the clothing drive.

“I try to look for projects we can do at school during the day that would be interesting and worthwhile to the students,” Johnson said.

While there is no goal for the number of items collected in the clothing drive, she said, she hopes to have as many people participate as possible.

“We just want total participation from the school’s students, teacher and staff,” Johnson said.

She added she hopes the drive will instill in the SCA students “to help others and to be of service to others.”

“They are enthusiastic about it,” Johnson said. “They are excited.”
