Powell quits commission

John Henry Powell, co-chairman of the Suffolk Bicentennial Commission, has submitted his resignation from that post following a controversy about the funding of Bicentennial events.

Powell, in an interview this morning, said that he was requested to bring all future expenditures before the City Council for approval.

The Commission has been working with a $10,000 budget, with the funding of programs handled by co-chairmen Powell and Mrs. F. Whitney Godwin.

However, according to city sources, the council had requested the city staff to bring both the Bicentennial Commission and the Beautification Commission under the same accounting rules as other city departments.

That means they would have to go to the director of finance before projects are funded.

East End, Hillcrest win in tournament

East End defeated a First Baptist team that finished the game with only three players, 79-71, and Hillcrest whipped Southside, 60-53, in Men’s Church Basketball League tournament games last night at Forest Glen.

In fact, Southside and First Baptist play each other in the first game tonight at 7. Hillcrest and East End play the second game at 8:30.

First Baptist fielded only five players and before the game ended two of them had fouled out.

Since the tournament moved to double elimination after the first round, both Southside and First Baptist will get to play again.

NSA JV team in finals

The varsity didn’t make it, but Nansemond-Suffolk Academy’s jayvee basketball team goes to Ashland tomorrow to play for the Virginia Academy Athletic Conference junior varsity championship.

The Saint jayvees, coached by Bill Eudy, finished unbeaten in conference competition and lost only one game to Eastern of Norfolk in a 17-1 season.

The NSA boys will meet Huguenot for the junior varsity championship in the preliminary to the championship varsity game at Randolph-Macon.

Members of the Saints jayvee team are John Bangley, Brian Cassada, Jamie Daughtrey, Forrest Dodson, Mark Garner, Joey Holland Peter Jackson, Steve Laine, Robert Nelms, John Nicodemo, Richard Wentz, and Clay White.

Drag Racing begins Sunday

The 1976 Drag Racing Season opens Sunday at Suffolk Raceway.

Open day will feature a Funny Car show with eight Blown Alcohol Funny Cars battling for over $3,700. Also on the program are open competition eliminators, Super Stocks, Formula Stock Eliminators, and Four E. T. Street Racer Eliminators. Time trials are at 12:30 p.m., eliminations at 3 p.m. Tech opens at 10 a.m. and close at 2:30 p.m.

Girl Scout’s birthday celebrations announced

The Brownie, Junior and Cadette Troops of East End Baptist Church will begin Girl Scout Week with worship service Sunday. Members are asked to be at the church at 10:45 a.m.

On Monday, March 8, the Junior Troop 727 and Cadette Troop 758 will participate in a Bicentennial Program at Booker T. Washington School given by the Peanut City Federation of Garden Club.

On Friday, March 12, Girl Scout Birthday Brownie Troop 772, Junior Troop 727 and Cadette Troop 758 will host a birthday party for all of the Girl Scouts in the Cherokee Neighborhood at 4 p.m. The party will close at 5 with the re-lighting of the &uot;Flames of Freedom&uot;

for our Country and the Flames of Girl Scouting as the major volunteer organization for Girls in the United States of America.

At the Girl Scout Convention in Washington D.C., First Lady Betty Ford, Honorary President, lighted the first Torch of Freedom. From that torch the six regions and all council presidents lighted their tapers.
