City lawmakers will snip the ribbon marking the opening of the Hilton Garden Inn and Suffolk Conference Center on Wednesday.
But most have already availed themselves to the services at the city’s new $22 million, 150-room hotel at Constant’s Wharf.
On Saturday – the day after the hotel officially opened to the public – the Industrial Development Authority hosted a dinner for 45 to 50 council members, IDA members and city officials, said Dennis Craff, the city’s spokesman.
Council members Charles F. Brown and Linda T. Johnson did not attend the event because of prior obligations.
&uot;It was a thank you for the people who worked hard on this project,&uot; said Craff.
Mayor Bobby Ralph and Councilman Joe Barlow stayed in the hotel Saturday night. Both said they paid for their own rooms.
The hotel, its restaurant and the adjoining 14,000-square-foot conference center opened with little publicity late Friday. The hotel restaurant, the Constant’s Wharf Grill, is also open.
The city is working with hotel officials on several community events in late April, when the city-owned marina and waterfront park opens, Craff said.
&uot;The city and the hotel have several events planned within the coming weeks that will celebrate our official opening,&uot; said Keith Alexander, the hotel’s general manager. &uot;We’ll pull out all the stops to make our grand opening events something special for the community.&uot;
