The Apprentice School’s men’s basketball team is off to a 5-1 start and is ranked No. 2 in the nation in the U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association.

The Builders, coached by former Nansemond River and Nansemond-Suffolk coach Franklin Chatman, split games in a tournament at Mary Washington last weekend. The Builders beat York (N.Y.) 55-42, then lost to the host Eagles 82-74. Chatman’s in his second season coaching the Builders.

Sophomore guard Latrone Demiel (Nansemond River) is averaging 8.0 minutes, 2.0 points and 1.5 rebounds a game for Apprentice.

The Builders visit Chowan Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Chowan (2-3) first must go to Div. I foe East Carolina (1-3) on Saturday for a 1 p.m. tip. CU power forward Quinton McDuffie(Nansemond River) is averaging 14.8 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. ECU is the only NCAA Div. I opponent CU plays this season.

Junior forward Nick Wright(Nansemond River) tallied career-highs with 24 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks but Old Dominion fell in overtime, 65-63, to visiting Vermont on Wednesday night in Norfolk.

Wright went 2-for-2 at the foul line with five seconds left in regulation to give the Monarchs a tie. Vermont beat ODU 5-3 in the overtime period.

ODU (3-3) hosts East Carolina Tuesday at 7 p.m.
