Police officers venture into the unknown every time they are called out, never knowing when they will face combative people or explosive situations.

We all know that Suffolk’s men and women in blue put their lives on the line every day.

Even so, that does little to lessen the shock and sorrow one feels upon learning of Officer William A. Henley’s untimely death early Saturday morning.

Henley, 33, died after collapsing during a foot pursuit on Webb Street, moments after apprehending the suspect he was chasing. An autopsy showed Henley’s death was caused by a medical condition.

Henley’s death is a great loss to the city and the law enforcement community. Our deepest prayers and sympathies are extended to his wife and four children as well as his professional family.

The next time you see a police officer, think about Officer Henley. Remember the sacrifice he made to make Suffolk a safer place for you to call home.

Then take a moment and thank that officer for the risks he takes every day.
