Garland Moody’s beginning as treasurer of the Eastover-Wilroy Ruritan Club was simple enough.

&uot;I started doing it because no one else wanted to!&uot; Moody, a 30-year member of the club, said Monday at a meeting.

A licensed contractor, retiree of the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and World War II veteran, Moody helped build both the Club and the next door Wilroy Baptist Church, of which he’s a member.

After 27 years of watching over the Club’s money, Moody called it quits in January. On Monday, the Club said thank you.

&uot;You’ve done a good job and you deserve this,&uot; Holland District Ruritan Governor Mills March told Moody, presenting him with a plaque.

&uot;They wanted to thank you from the bottom of their hearts for all you’ve done.&uot;

That’s a list that could stretch on and on, said vice president Al White.

&uot;Anybody who keeps the books for 27 years deserves this,&uot; he said. &uot;If you can’t get along with Garland, you can’t get along with anyone.&uot;

&uot;That felt great,&uot; Moody said. &uot;I always enjoyed being with these people.&uot;
