Traveling back to World War II

World War II history was relived recently for students in Amy Hatfield’s Honors World History II class at Nansemond River High School.

As a culmination of their unit on World War II, the teacher invited her grandfather, Grover Burgess (third from the left), and her mother, Kathleen Taylor, to share their life experiences about the war with the students.

Burgess is a World War II veteran who served in the 630th Tank Destroyer Battalion and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Taylor has collected memorabilia that belongs to her father and an abundance of material related to World War II.

Students were given the opportunity to examine artifacts from WWII including Burgess’ uniforms, medals and his personal photograph album.

Students were able to ask questions and engage in conversation with Burgess.

This unique experience left a lasting impression on the students.
