County Schools will make up two missing days

The Nansemond County School Board held a brief meeting Tuesday night at which it was decided to make up two days lost due to snow conditions.

The lost days will be made up on Thursday, April 14 and Saturday, April 23.

Superintendent H. V. White told the Board the Negro schools would close April 8 to permit the teachers to attend the District Meeting of the Virginia Teachers Association of Norfolk.

He also informed the Board that quartennial school census will begin within the next 30 days. The work will consist of listing all children in the school district.

Public speaking class scheduled for library

A non-credit course in public speaking is being offered at the Morgan Memorial Library here this spring by the University of Virginia’s Division of Extension and General Studies.

The first class meeting is set for Tuesday, April 12 at 7 p.m. Registration will begin at 6:45 p.m. in the library.

Registrations will be accepted in advance at the Hampton Roads Center office, 216-A Midtown Building, Ward’s Corner, Norfolk, 5 or by mail.

Public speaking is a basic course for the preparation of speeches and the techniques of speaking before groups.

Easter shoppers should be aware of pickpockets

Chief Lawrence B. Butler of the Suffolk Police Department, warns Easter shoppers to &uot;use caution to avoid the loss of purchases or money while shopping this year.&uot;

In a statement issued today, Butler tells shoppers to &uot;beware of any person pushing or loitering around you, as frequently your billfold may be taken from your handbag or pocket.&uot;

Butler said shoppers should be sure bags are securely fastened. Bags should be checked frequently and should not be laid down while the customer makes a purchase.

Salvation Army group to attend meeting

Four members of the Suffolk Salvation Army Young People’s Legion will attend the Young People’s Council’s annual meeting in Charleston, W. Va., this weekend.

They are Luther Ellis, Vera Ellis, Linda Vandiford and Robert Horton. Accompanying them will be Capt. Howard F. Costner, pastor of the Suffolk Salvation Army Chapel and Mrs. Costner.

The meeting will be held April 8 through 10 at the Charleston Shrine Club auditorium.

Welfare workers to attend meet in Roanoke

Suffolk and Nansemond County Welfare Department representatives will attend the annual meeting of the Virginia Council n Social Welfare in Roanoke, April 27-30.

Mrs. Mary Virginia Turner, superintendent of the Suffolk Welfare Department and Mrs. Harriett J. Naylor, child welfare worker, will be represented by Willard Frank and Seth Nedam, public assistants and Mrs. Jennie Butler, child welfare worker.

At the opening general session April 27, Dr. A. L. Chapman will deliver the keynote address. Dr. Chapman is assistant surgeon general and chief of the division of special health services, Department of Health, Education and Welfare, Washington D.C.

The theme of the meeting this year is &uot;Better Communication-Better Social Welfare.&uot;

Special emphasis will be given to the problems of aging.
