Laurel Garden Club to meet

The Laurel Garden Club will meet at 11 a.m. on today at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, 1885 Bridge Road, Suffolk. The group will carpool to the Red Maple Inn in Newport News. The program will consist of a garden tour, lunch and presentation of year-end awards.

March of Dimes bass tournament

Suffolk Parks and Recreation at Lone Star Lakes Park on Saturday, May 14 for the annual March of Dimes Bass Fishing Tournament from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

This event cost is $25 per boat with a two person per boat maximum.

One half of the proceeds will benefit March of Dimes and the other half will go to the tournament winners. For more information or to register, call 255-4308 or 923-2360.

Relay for Life golf tournament

The Supreme Foods Relay for Life team will be sponsoring a golf tournament on May 10 at Sleepy Hole Golf Course. Lunch is at noon with tee off between 12:30 and 1 p.m. Cost will be $60 per player and includes green fees, cart, lunch, snacks, & prizes.

The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life 2005 will be held on May 20-21 at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy beginning at 7 p.m.

Whaleyville fish fry

The Whaleyville Volunteer Fire Department will sponsor a Spring fish fry &uot;Filet of Trout&uot; from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Fire Station #8, 6235 Whaleyville Blvd., Suffolk. Tickets will be available from members and will be sold at door. There will also be a bake sale by Great Fork Baptist Church. For more information call 620-9072.

STOP offering assistance

STOP, a non-profit organization, is offering weatherization assistance. The program assists income-eligible households with weatherizing their homes. STOP serves Norfolk, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach, Suffolk, Hampton, Franklin, Isle of Wight and Southampton counties. Call 858-1397 for more information.

March against drugs

The Faith House of Refuge will be having a march against drugs from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. An open cookout and recreational activities will be free of charge for those that attend. The march will begin at Faith House of Refuge #2 and proceed through downtown Suffolk, ending at Planters Park near Suffolk Station. Call 538-0808 for more information.

Dover Downs trip

The Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, a non-profit organization, will be sponsoring a trip to Dover Downs on May 21. The cost of the trip is $55 round trip. Departure time is 7 a.m. The purpose of the trip is to raise money for scholarships. Call 252-357-3537 before May 3.

Senior aerobics offered

Senior aerobics is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10-11 a.m. at the Suffolk Senior Center, located at 350 N. Main St. Betty Cartwright instructs this class, which is free to seniors 55 and over. For more information call the Senior Center at 923-2372.

Masonic Charity Ride

The 56th Masonic District is sponsoring a Charity Ride on May 7 for the Ronald McDonald House. The ride will start at the Virginia Beach Lodge #274 on 20th Street and Arctic Avenue, Virginia Beach. Registration will be held from 8 and 11 a.m. (1st bike out at 9 a.m.). The cost is $10 for riders and $5 for passengers. Donation items needed consist of household and kitchen goods. Constantia Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will meet at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 12 at Village at Wood’s Edge in Franklin, with Mrs. Burton C. Alumni offer scholarships

Applications for the Suffolk Chapter of Norfolk State University Alumni Association Scholarship Award of $500 are available from the guidance department at King’s Fork, Lakeland and Nansemond River high schools. Graduating seniors planning to further their education at Norfolk State University are encouraged to pick up an application from their guidance counselor.
