The new Hilton Garden Inn and Suffolk Conference Center has been open for about a month now and if you haven’t had the opportunity to visit yet, you’re in for a treat.

The News-Herald is planning on taking you there Sunday.

We’ll have a 12-page special section of the paper devoted to the complex that I think you’ll enjoy. Managing Editor Luefras Robinson spent the night there and will report on the food, the service, the rooms, the views and other amenities.

Luefras said she spent a lot of time during her stay interviewing employees and was impressed by the quality of people of working there. There will also be other stories from others on our staff and lots of photos.

We were a little unsure of what to expect when undertaking the section, but advertising support was wonderful.There are more than 80 businesses who placed ads in the section, which I think is a good gauge of the excitement the hotel is generating.

I visited again Wednesday for lunch and was disappointed to see the lunch menu had been revamped. As a vegetarian, I was thrilled when the hotel opened and featured a portabella mushroom burger. It was wonderful.

Today it wasn’t there. Our waitress said said they completely revamped the menu and it was dropped. That was disappointing. Vegetarian fare in Suffolk doesn’t seem to last long. When Kelly’s opened, you could replace the beef with a black bean burger on any of their burgers but they ended up dropping the option as well.

So I settled for a salad and an order of fries for lunch Wednesday. It was still good and the atmosphere in the restaurant was it wonderful.

I had my boss from Alabama as a guest.

He was excited about everything that’s happening in Suffolk and thinks the city, and the newspaper, have big things ahead. That was good to hear, I guess, except that he’s sure to be expecting a lot more out of us.

Anyway, don’t forget to pick up extra copies of Sunday’s paper to send to friends and former residents.
