River charges away to short victory

A six-run fourth inning broke open a close game for Nansemond River Friday, as the Warriors used the spurt to carry them on to a 10-0, six-inning win over visiting Lakeland.

After the teams combined for just one hit in the first two innings, Josh Harrell reached on an error in the third. Tyren Rivers walked, and Will Hirsch smacked a single to deep center to knock in Harrell.

Josh Cousins led off the fourth with a double to left, and Shane Vernon went in to pinch-run. Tim Eure singled Vernon home, and David Mattei reached on an error. Mike Joseph doubled home both runners, and Chris Williams walked. Rivers tripled down the left-field line to clear the bases again, and Hirsch followed suit with a triple of his own to up the lead to 7-0.

Joseph and Williams walked to open the six, and both advanced on a wild pitch. An infield single by Rivers scored Joseph, and Hirsch singled to drive in Rivers. The runners advanced on another wild pitch, and Justin Topping singled over short to scored Rivers and end the game early.

River will host Deep Creek on Tuesday, while Lakeland battles Oscar Smith at home.
