Musical fundraiser

The Suffolk Blazers 2 AAU basketball team will be sponsoring a fundraiser at 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 30, at Nansemond River High School.  The theme is "Praise Is What I Do," and will feature various choirs and praise dance teams from Suffolk. Tickets are $5 and may be purchased at the door or in advance from any team member. The proceeds from this event will help the team travel to the Virginia State Tournament in Bristol May 13-15. Kilby Shores Spring Fling

Kilby Shores Elementary School will be hosting a Spring Fling from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 30, at the school. Pay $10 and ride all day. Plenty of games and refreshments.

Whaleyville Fish fry

The Whaleyville Volunteer Fire Department will sponsor a Spring fish fry "Filet of Trout" from 4 to 7 p.m. on May 7 at Fire Station #8, 6235 Whaleyville Blvd., Suffolk. Senior aerobics offered

Senior aerobics is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10-11 a.m. at the Suffolk Senior Center, located at 350 N. Main St. Betty Cartwright instructs this class, which is free to seniors 55 and over. For more information call the Senior Center at 923-2372.

Suffolk campus enrolling

The Virginia University of Lynchburg, Suffolk campus is enrolling for the fall semester, which takes place Aug. 30 to Dec. 13. The college is located at the Pleasant Union Baptist Church, 215 Webb St. Registration takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 n 9 p.m. through May 2. Programs offered include an Associate of Arts and Science degree, certificate in ministry, Bachelor of Arts in religious studies and a master's of divinity degree. Financial aid is available. Masonic Charity Ride

The 56th Masonic District is sponsoring a Charity Ride on May 7 for the Ronald McDonald House. The ride will start at the Virginia Beach Lodge #274 on 20th Street and Arctic Avenue, Virginia Beach. Registration will be held from 8 and 11 a.m. (1st bike out at 9 a.m.). The cost is $10 for riders and $5 for passengers. Donation items needed consist of household and kitchen goods. Laurel Garden Club to meet

The Laurel Garden Club will meet at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 4 at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, 1885 Bridge Road, Suffolk. The group will carpool to the Red Maple Inn in Newport News. The program will consist of a garden tour, lunch and presentation of year-end awards.

DAV soup kitchen

DAR meeting

Constantia Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will meet at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 12 at Village at Wood's Edge in Franklin, with Mrs. Burton C. Bradshaw and Mrs. William Henry Abbitt as hostesses. Dr. Richard M. Thein, retired chief anesthesiologist for Obici Hospital, will be the speaker on "How to be a Naturalized American Citizen." Alumni offer scholarships

Applications for the Suffolk Chapter of Norfolk State University Alumni Association Scholarship Award of $500 are available from the guidance department at King's Fork, Lakeland and Nansemond River hgh shools. Graduating seniors planning to further their education at Norfolk State University are encouraged to pick up an application from their guidance counselor. Obici Alumni raising funds

Every year the Louise Obici Alumni Association puts on a fundraiser to generate money for the Louise Obici School of Nursing Scholarship which is awarded to one or more deserving students, who are pursuing a special certificate, diploma, degree, or post-graduate degree in the nursing field. This year the membership has chosen to offer a Take-Out Barbecue Dinner. The dinner will consist of Carolina BBQ, baked beans, slaw, and a roll. The organization will also have a bke sle and bzaar, featuring desserts and handmade items.

The fundraiser will take place Saturday, April 30 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the north entrance of the Suffolk Christian Church on North Main St., Suffolk.

The BBQ dinners will cost $6 each, or 2 for $10.

Impact Suffolk

The citywide prayer meeting sponsored by Impact Suffolk will be held at Magnolia United Methodist Church, 1764 Wilroy Road, in Suffolk at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 27. There will be a potluck lunch at noon. The prayer meeting normally takes place on the fourth Wednesday of each month. Call Rev. Russell Leonard at 255-4720 or Dot Dalton at 255-2134 for details.

Wakefield Foundation

The Wakefield Foundation Inc., Center for the Arts, will host its 17th annual Flower and Art Show on the evening of May 7. This year's show will feature the work of more than 50 artists, each artwork accompanied by a floral arrangement designed to produce a unified, harmonious display. The reception, open to the public, will start at 7 p.m. Admission at the door will be $10 per person. The reception will be catered and musical entertainment will be provided by Robin Welch, classical guitarist, an instructor at Hampton University.

From noon to 4 p.m. Family Day takes place Sunday, May 8 from noon until 4 p.m. Family Day is less formal than the opening reception and is designed to allow children and their parents the opportunity to view the exhibit together. A light reception will be served and admission will be $2 per person.

The local schools and groups have been invited to have their students tour the exhibition from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Monday, May 9.

The Flower and Art Show has been a yearly event for the Wakefield Foundation since 1988. Student, Professional and amateur artists are allowed to submit one work each to be included in the show. All media are acceptable and ribbons are awarded in various categories. In addition, a monetary Best in Show award is given.

Homework assistance

Parents should enroll their children in the After School Homework Assistance/Tutorial Program at East Suffolk Community Center. The program is from 3:30 until 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday for students in Grades K-7.

Applications may be picked up from the center from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Sara Lee offering computer classes

Sara Lee Coffee and Tea in Suffolk, is offering free Microsoft Office 2005 computer classes. Classes include MS Excel, MS Access, MS PowerPoint, and MS Word. The next class is scheduled for April 18. For more information and class specifics, contact human resources immediately at 538-4179.

Relay for Life teams forming

Volunteers are needed to form teams for the American Cancer Society's 2005 Isle of Wight Relay for Life. The fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research will be held on Friday, June 3 through Saturday, June 4 at Windsor High School. Rummage, plant and craft sale

The Magnolia United Methodist Church at 1764 Wilroy Road in Suffolk will hold a Rummage, Plant and Craft sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 7. Breakfast, lunch, a bake sale, silent auction, entertainment, children's games, activities and door prizes will also be offered. The Rev. Mike Derflinger is the pastor.

Whaleyville Community Day

The Whaleyville Ruritan Club is sponsoring a Whaleyville Community Day on Saturday, May 7 with a parade starting at 9:30 a.m. on Whaleyville Boulevard. This year's Community Day features arts and crafts, business expos, live entertainment, antiques and plenty of delicious food. Vendor spaces are now available at the Whaleyville Community Center. Delta Kappa Gamma to award scholarship

The Alpha Theta Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, is offering two $1,500 awards to two Suffolk high school seniors.

This award, known as the Gladys H. Yates Award, is given to honor the memory of Yates, a teacher who taught in the Suffolk Public School system for many years. Yates, a past president of Alpha Theta Chapter, made many contributions to education.

The applicant must be a senior from a high school within the city of Suffolk, accepted by an accredited college or community college, an honor graduate have a B average or 3.0 or above, planning to pursue a career in teaching and a resident of Suffolk.

Holland UCC welcomes seniors

Holland United Church of Christ, 6733 S. Quay Road, is opening the fellowship hall from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesdays to all seniors for refreshments and games.

Power wheelchairs available

The Three Wishes Inc. Program makes available to senior citizens and the permanently disabled power (electric) wheelchairs at no cost to the recipient, if they qualify. The power wheelchairs are provided to those who cannot walk and cannot self-propel a manual wheelchair in their home, and who meet the additional guidelines of the program.
