The city is rolling out the red carpet at the new Constant’s Wharf Park and Marina this weekend, with plenty of fireworks, music and fun.
The all-day event kicks off at 11 a.m. Saturday with the dedication of the park on the Nansemond River, behind the new Hilton Garden Inn and Suffolk Conference Center. That event will follow on the heels of two other city events-the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce’s State of the City address on Thursday and the Mayor’s Ball on Friday.
People will find a family-friendly event with an array of activities geared toward the young crowd – face painters, jugglers, and games, said Dennis Craff, spokesman for the city. Artists from Young Audiences of Virginia will perform throughout the day. Several downtown restaurants will be selling food at the event, he added.
The daytime activities will end at 3 p.m., with evening festivities gearing up at 4:30 p.m. The band, Groove Spot, will take the stage at 5 p.m., with the headline entertainment, national recording artist Fighting Gravity, performing at 7:30.
The day will close with a fireworks display, courtesy of the city’s Industrial Development Authority.
&uot;This is a great way to kick off the season,&uot; said Craff.
&uot;We want to introduce the park to the people of Suffolk.&uot;
Satellite parking areas with a complimentary shuttle service will open at 4 p.m. They are located in the old Obici Hospital lot on North Main Street and the Commerce Street parking lot.
