Suffolk Public Schools will have staff development day on Tuesday, May 3.
No students will be in school.
Crossing over from Boyhood to Manhood
The Suffolk chapter of Las Amigas Inc. and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity present &uot;Crossing Over from Boyhood to Manhood, A Road Map for Your Future&uot; today at 9:30 a.m. at the East Suffolk Community Center, 134 S. Sixth St. The 2005 Brotherhood Workshop is for males 12-16.
University of Lynchburg commencement
The Virginia University of Lynchburg, Suffolk teaching site, will observe its 13th commencement exercises at 7 p.m. May 3 at Pleasant Union Baptist Church, 215 Webb St. The Rev. Dr. Fred Boddie of Mt. Hermon Baptist Temple, is the commencement speaker.
Boddie is also on the faculty of V.U.L. in the master of divinity progam. The mass choir will render the music. Dr. Naomi P. Chambers is the director, and the Rev. Dr. Ralph Reavis is the university president.
March against Drugs
The Faith House of Refuge will be having a march against drugs from 9 a.m. to noon May 7. An open cookout and recreational activities will be free
for those that attend. The march will begin at Faith House of Refuge #2 and proceed through Downtown Suffolk ending at Planters Park near Suffolk Station. Call 538-0808 for more information.
Suffolk Substitute Teachers’ Association

Suffolk Health Department
From 8 a.m. to noon Monday, May 2, the Suffolk Health Department will have free blood pressure and diabetes screenings in the main lobby on 1217 N. Main Street.
Cholesterol screenings are $10
West End Civic League

East Suffolk Civic League
The East Suffolk Federated Civic League will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday at STOP Center for Employment Training at 125 Tynes St. Shirley Christian is the president.
Lawrence Family sponsors trip
The Lawrence family is sponsoring a vacation outing to Atlanta, Ga. and Orlando, Fla., from July 15 through July 20. The trip consists of a two nights in Atlanta at the Holiday Inn (Northlake) to visit The Martin Luther King Center for the Non-Violence, the famous Underground and the Coca Cola factory, and then to Orlando for a three night stay at the Quality Inn Plaza (International Drive). Kings Fork Ruritans
The Kings Fork Ruritans will be sponsoring a yard sale from 7 a.m. to noon today. The yard sale will be held at the Kings Fork Community Center on Kings Fork Road. All proceeds from the yard sale will benefit the American Cancer Society and the Suffolk Relay for Life.
ESH Class of ’65
A meeting will be held at 5 p.m. today for the planning of the East Suffolk High School Class of 1965 Reunion on Aug. 5-6. The meeting will take place at 2509 Woodland Trail, Suffolk. Call 538-0353 for more information.
Eastover Wilroy Ruritan Club
Eastover Wilroy Ruritan Club will have a pancake breakfast from 6:30 to noon on May 7 at the clubhouse on Williams Road behind Wilroy Baptist Church. There will be a donation of $5.
East Suffolk Alumni Association
The East Suffolk Alumni Association will meet at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 7 at the East Suffolk Complex which is located on Sixth Street.
STOP offering assistance
The STOP Organization, a non-profit organization, is offering weatherization assistance. The program assists income-eligible households with weatherizing their homes. STOP serves Norfolk, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach, Suffolk, Hampton, Franklin, Isle of Wight and Southampton counties. Call 858-1397 for more information.

Dover Downs trip
The Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, a non-profit organization will be sponsoring a trip to Dover Downs on May 21. The cost of the trip is $55 round trip. Departure time is 7 a.m. The purpose of the trip is to raise money for scholarships. Call 252-357-3537 before May 3.
