Ministering Circle endorses Youth recreation center

The Ministering Circle of the King’s Daughter’s endorsed the movement for a recreation center for the youth of Suffolk at its meeting Monday afternoon with Mrs. W. R. Eason at her home on South Broad Street.

Mrs. C. Rawles presided in the absence of the leader, Mrs. Floyd Bryant, and the worship service was led by Mrs. Hardy Cross.

She had for the subject &uot;Abundant Life In Christ.&uot; Mrs. Rawles read &uot;Heroes of Yesterday and Today.&uot;

The circle voted to donate to the Cancer Control program and closing prayer was given by Mrs. Cross.

After the program refreshments were served by Mrs. Eason.

Attending the meeting were Mrs. Frank Rogers, Mrs. Hardy Cross, Mrs. A. A. Turner, Mrs. C. C. Rawles and Mrs. W. R. Eason.

Locals entertain Granby here Friday night

The Suffolk High Raiders will meet the Morrison Farmers here tomorrow afternoon at Peanut Park in a Group Two Scholastic baseball league contest starting at 3 p.m.

The local Raiders will entertain the Granby High Comets of Norfolk here Friday night starting at 8:15 p.m.

The invaders are members of the Tidewater scholastic diamond loop.

Another afternoon contest is booked for Peanut Park today with the Norview Pilots landing in Suffolk for a Group Two league game with the local Raiders starting at 3 p.m.

The Raiders will be gunning for their second-straight scholastic league victory tomorrow afternoon against the invading Farmers having defeated Churchland 2-1 here last Friday night behind the brilliant three-hit twirling of hurler Calvin Schadel.

Coach Dick White will probably start Jimmie Baines against Morrison with Raleigh Ellis back of the plate with Schadel booked in work the Granby night contest Friday.

Health campaign opens here today

Today the Child Health campaign, with the birth registration as its main goal, finally opens up in Suffolk and Nansemond County.

The local Health Department reports that there is a full registration of both city and county births with an average of about 15 inquiries received a week. However, it was added that the registration usually is poorest in rural areas, and also among non-white populations in both urban and rural committees.

The campaign is being conducted throughout the state and nation to obtain complete birth registrations of all babies born in 1944.

Parents with children born during that year should make sure that notification of the birth registration has been received from the State Health Department’s Bureau of Vital Statistics.

City residents may register births at the local Health Department with Mrs. E. J. Moore, the local registrar.

County residents may also register with the following people R. E. Rogers, in Cypress; Mrs. H. H. Hunter and T. V. Arthur in Whaleyville; Dr. Gilmer Holland and P. O. Duck in Holland and Holy Neck; Mrs. J. B. Archer in Lower Chuckatuck; C. H. Pitt, in Upper Chuckatuck; Mrs. J. H. Shreaves in Crittenden; Mrs. I. J. Richardson in Churchland and I. T. Arthur in Driver.
