Pleasant Union Baptist Church, 215 Webb St., will observe Family and Friends Day at 11:15 a.m. Sunday. The guest church will be Christian Family Baptist and pastor, the Rev. James Powell Sr. of Laplata, Md.

Rev. Powell is the brother of Pleasant Union co-pastor Rev. N. P. Chambers and a native of Portsmouth.

He received a bachelor’s of science degree in Mathmatics at Maryland State College in 1958; a master’s in Urban and Regional Planning and Community Redevelopment at the University of Colorado, 1974; master’s in Christian Counseling, Maple Springs Bible Baptist College and Seminary, 1994; Teacher Training Courses, United States Air Force, 1969; Marriage Enrichment Facilitator Training Courses, Maryland/Delaware Convention, Southern Baptist Congress, 1992; and pursued studies as a preacher and church planner beginning in 1994.

He is married to the former Johnell Jones and they have three children (two sons and one daughter) and seven grandchildren.

Rev. Eley, a native of Suffolk, is the daughter of Ruby Watkins and the late Charlie Grant. Eley is the product of Suffolk City School system where she graduated in 1979 from Suffolk High School. She is also a 1988 graduate of Louise Obici School of Practical Nursing. Eley graduated the Louise Obici School of Professional Nursing in 1991. Eley now specializes in the field of geriatric and orthopedic at Obici Hospital.

Eley is a member of Tabernacle Christian Church, where she serves as Sunday School teacher for ages 12-18. Rev. Eley serves on various ministries at Tabernacle. (pastor’s aide, nursing ministry, and the glam and missionary society).

The Rev. Sandra Freeman is the daughter of Mrs. Goldie O. Walloe and the late Lloyd Walloe Jr. of Franklin. Rev. Freeman is a 1968 graduate of the former Georgia Tyler High School in Windsor.

She accepted her call to the ministry in April of 1995 and preached her initial sermon on September 17, 2000. She is a graduate of the United Christian College where she received a Certificate in Christian Education, a Certificate of Academic Achievement in Systematic Theology, Romans and the Acts of the Apostles. Freeman worked as coordinator of the women’s ministry at Pleasant Shade Baptist Church, and has served on the board of directors of the Southeastern Tidewater Opportunity Project (STOP) in Norfolk. Rev. Freeman serves as co-Pastor alongside her husband of 39 years, Pastor Dr. Willis Freeman Sr.

They are parents of four young adults and the grandparents of seven.
