Dressing judging enters last week

Nansemond County’s Home Demonstration Clubs will go into their fourth and final week of judging in their home constructed ready made Better Dress this week, Mrs. Lillian Livesay, county Home Demonstration Agent, said today.

Winners in each club will be selected by judges using a score card provided by Miss Iva Byrd Johnson, state clothing specialist.

As a finale to the individual club contests, a Dress Revenue will be held at the Spring Festival Wednesday, June 22, in the First Baptist Church, Suffolk, from 2 to 5 p.m. Two members from each club will model their dresses.

League elects officers

E. H. Stephenson was elected president of the Planters Employee Bowling League at the loops annual banquet held last night at Planters Club.

Other officers elected were Pete Murphy, vice-president and Marshall Parker, secretary and treasurer.

Guest speakers at the banquet included G. A. Nimmo, O. H. Parker, M. J. English and Mario Peruzzi, all Planters Nut and Chocolate Company officials and Harry Westnedge Sr., manager of the bowling alleys here.

Other guests included J. T. McClenny, of Suffolk, and Nicky ReDavid, of Norfolk.

English made the trophy presentations to the following: Robert Hughes, high three games set; R. Byrum, high single game; Hubert Powell, Plant, high team average; Garland Gray, pipe fitters, high team average; Wade Doughtie, auditors, high team average; Sam Powell, Machine Shop, high team average.

Trophies were awarded to members of the championship Personnel team-Captain Fletcher Beadles Surrey Kelley, Archie Boykin, A. Felton and Marshall Parker. Members of the runner up team, machine shop, also won trophies. Members were Ted LoCascio captain V. Delpiero, Robert Hughes, G. Moore, Cam Powell and Frank Snyder.

Scout leaders at Camp Waters

Local Scout leaders traveled to Camp Waters this weekend to begin preliminary operations preparatory to the formal opening of the Old Dominion Council Area summer camp on July 3.

Those in the party are W. G. Saunders, of Chuckatuck, camping committee chairman for the Eastern District, W. B. Harrell Jr., commissioner and co-director of camp, O. O. Briley, scoutmaster of Troop 18, Edgar Speight, field commissioner, H. M. Haynes, Eastern district chairman, E. T. Jakeman, field commissioner, Webb Pinner, scoutmaster of Troop 5, Executive G. Warren Taylor and Jessie Hancock.

Mr. Taylor stated that it is intended that the group construct a platform float to be used in connection with the water front program and new tent flooring.

Mills Godwin to seek re-election

Simultaneous announcements were issued yesterday by Mills Godwin, incumbent representative to the General Assembly from Suffolk and Nansemond County and Willis E. Cohoon, former holder of the Assembly office from this district.

Godwin announced intention to seek the Democratic nomination in the primary to be held August 2 and subsequent reelection to the House of Delegates, while Cohoon squelched any presumption that he would enter the race against Mr. Godwin this year. The former assembly man did, however, state that he would offer for the State Senate in 1951 &uot;in the event&uot; the present senator, A. E. S. Stephens, of Smithfield relinquished his seat at that time.

The next of Godwin’s announcement is as follows:

It is my purpose again to seek the Democratic Nomination for the House of Delegates from the City of Suffolk and Nansemond County in the Primary to be held next August 2.

&uot;If re-nominated and reelected I shall endeavor, in the past, to serve the people of this City and County to the best of my ability.

&uot;It is a high honor to be a Delegate to the General Assembly of Virginia and with the many and various problems confronting this next Session, there will be a real challenge to the member of the Legislature to render valuable service to the people of this state.&uot;

Scout busy planning Camp Water season

The principal topic of discussion in Boy Scout circles now a day is concerned with planning for attendance at the Old Dominion Area Council’s summer camp at Camp Waters, which opens July 3.

The attractive site of Scout’s summer activities is located on a high bluff overlooking the James River directly across the river from historic Jamestown. Motorist may get bearings at Surry Court House for a visit to the camp location, however, for those who can follow signs on highway No. 31 northeast through for four miles and turn right at the Camp Waters sing.

In a camp bulletin being currently distributed by Scout Executive G. Warren Taylor from headquarters in Suffolk for the information of Scouts and parents answers to all questions they might ask are included therein.
