According to a media release, the Suffolk Police Department’s Animal Control Division is currently investigating allegations of animal neglect in the 1200 block of Buckhorn Drive. The investigation began on Sunday, Jan. 26, 2025.

During the investigation, officers executed multiple search warrants at the property and nearby locations, all owned by the same individuals. The search revealed a grim situation involving numerous horses. Twenty-two horses were found in a state of suspected neglect, and six deceased horses were also discovered on the property. The deceased horses were in various states of decomposition. They have been transported to the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services for necropsies to determine their cause of death.

Suffolk Police are working closely with the Commonwealth of Virginia’s State Veterinarian and an independent licensed veterinarian to evaluate and treat all the surviving horses on the property. The Suffolk General District Court has ordered the 22 horses to be impounded. They will be moved once suitable boarding arrangements have been made.
