SUFFOLK, Virginia — A large fire broke out at the landfill in Suffolk, early Thursday, Jan. 2, 2025. The fire was reported at 5:03 a.m. in the 100 block of Bob Foeller Drive. Smoke and flames were visible from Route 58, according to Suffolk Fire and Rescue’s social media. Firefighters were working on the hill to contain the fire. Officials said the fire was deep-seated and that wind was complicating their efforts. Water was being shuttled up the hill to fight the fire. There were no reported injuries. Operations were expected to continue throughout the morning.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Chief Michael J. Barakey says the cause and origin of the blaze is still under investigation. 45 firefighters worked the incident. Barakey also said there is no threat to any structure and the area of the fire is being monitored by SFR as they begin to clear the scene. He advises smoke may still be visible to motorists traveling along Route 58 near Downtown Suffolk for several hours and assures the public there is no threat to the community.
