The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) announced an update on the Southeastern Public Service Authority (SPSA) Interchange Improvements Project. Starting the week of December 16, 2023, crews will begin reopening the long-term, continuous single-lane closures on Route 58 east and west. This will reestablish three lanes of travel in each direction between the Route 58 median crossover at the SPSA entrance (Bob Foeller Drive) to just west of the weigh station. Crews are scheduled to reopen the eastbound lane as early as overnight Monday, Dec. 16, followed by the westbound lane the following evening. However, the shoulders on Route 58 in both directions are scheduled to remain closed along this same corridor until approximately summer 2026.
Motorists should expect intermittent overnight single-lane closures, lane shifts, and occasional intermittent full closures on Route 58 as the project continues.
The public will be advised of any scheduled full closures or significant traffic shifts. Motorists are advised to drive with caution and be alert for construction vehicles entering and exiting the work zone. All work is weather — and scheduled — dependent and subject to change.
