Sixteen recruits were sworn into the Suffolk Police Department at City Hall on Tuesday. Recruits were sworn in by W. Randolph Carter, clerk of the circuit court, in front of their loved ones. Remarks were made by Mayor Michael Duman and Police Chief James Buie.
The officers’ designees lined up down the center of the room to accept a badge from Buie before standing in front of their officer to pin them. The room was silent as badges were pinned to chests before erupting in cheers and applause.
During his remarks, Duman mentioned how he doesn’t remember a recruiting class of this size and talked about the positive reputation the city’s police force has. He continued to highlight how only 3% of applicants are even accepted into the program.
“I want you to know that you are joining a team of extraordinary individuals. The men and women who comprise one of the most exemplary, outstanding law enforcement agencies in the Commonwealth of Virginia,” Duman said. “The badge that you are about to wear is more than just a symbol of authority, it is a symbol of trust. It is a reminder that the citizens of Suffolk are counting on you to protect and serve with the utmost of respect and fairness.”
He also acknowledged the sacrifice that friends and families make to first responders.
“You are their foundation, their strength, and their inspiration,” he said. “You, too, will take on a new role within our community, and for that we are deeply grateful.”
Buie then made his remarks, commenting on the next steps these new officers will take to complete their training. First, they will go through five weeks of post-academy training and then will complete 12 weeks of field training with a field officer.
He echoed Duman’s remarks and called these new officers the “best 3% that society has to offer.”
Buie went on to give some advice to them, mentioning the importance of family, having a hard work ethic, focusing on their career path, being and having a mentor, being passionate about the job and having good integrity and a good character.
He then asked all sworn police officers in the room, new and old, to stand for the oath of honor.
“I can speak for all the Suffolk Police Department when I say we are extremely proud of all of you, and welcome to the family,” he finished.
