Anne Mayo Council, age 84, of Suffolk, Virginia, passed away peacefully at Lake Prince Woods on November 21, 2024. Born Anne Holmes Mayo on March 8, 1940, in Suffolk, Virginia, she was the eldest daughter of James Edward Mayo, Jr. and Pocahontas Holmes Mayo. Anne grew up on Brewer Avenue in Suffolk, where she cherished many happy memories with her parents and her beloved sister, Ruth. A graduate of Suffolk High School, she continued her education at Longwood College, leading to her career as a teacher. While she taught briefly in Hampton, she spent the majority of her career teaching at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy from 1977-1993.
In 1965, Anne married the love of her life, John M. Council, and together, they spent 59 years building a beautiful life in Suffolk, raising their two sons, Scott and Michael. Anne was a member of Oxford Methodist Church and volunteered with the American Cancer Society.
Anne’s greatest joy was her family. She adored spending time with her grandchildren, often watching them perform on school stages, in sports competitions, or simply entertaining her at home. In her retirement, Anne nurtured her creative side by taking art classes, and she enjoyed framing her favorite works for her loved ones. She also treasured the companionship of her devoted, kind and generous neighbors and friends, who were always there to lend a hand when needed. Anne was a lover of word puzzles, and she could often be found solving a crossword from the comfort of her home.
Anne is survived by her beloved husband, John Council; her sons, Scott Council of Richmond, Virginia, and Michael Council and wife Kenda of Suffolk, Virginia; her four grandchildren, Brooks, Anne Douglas, Maren and Aubrey; her sister, Ruth Milin and husband Al; her brothers-in-law, Howard Council and wife Becky, and Don Council and wife Faye; as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. She is predeceased by her parents, her nephew Tony Milin, and her mother-in-law, Johnnie Lane Salmon.
Friends and family are invited to join the Council family for a gathering at the home of Kenda and Michael Council, 915 E. Riverview Drive, Suffolk, on Sunday, November 24, 2024, from 4-6 PM. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Anne’s memory to Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, 3373 Pruden Boulevard, Suffolk, Virginia 23434, a school that meant so much to Anne and her loved ones.
Arrangements are being handled by R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home, Downtown Suffolk Chapel.
