Suffolk saw nearly 3,000 more votes in the 2024 General Election than it did in 2020, but still saw a lower percentage of voters taking to the polls. This is largely due to a jump in registered voters of approximately 10,000, according to data from the Virginia Department of Elections. 

In 2020, the City of Suffolk had 67,912 voters on the books compared to this year, data shows as of the Nov. 5 election, Suffolk has 76,736 registered voters.

In 2020, 73% of registered voters took to the polls, versus this year’s 68%. 

The outcome on a presidential level was nearly identical, leaning largely Democrat, as it has since. In 2024, 57.13% of voters cast ballots for Democrat nominee Kamala Harris and 41.34% for President-elect Donald Trump. In 2020, 57.8% voted in favor of the Democrat ticket of Biden and Harris and 40.5% in favor of the Republican ticket of Trump and Mike Pence.

The same can be said for both United States Senate and House of Representatives races. For Senate, Democrat incumbent Tin Kaine pulled in 59.65% of the vote in Suffolk compared to his Republican opponent Hung Cao, who gathered 40.21% of the Suffolk vote. The House of Representatives 2nd District race was slightly closer, with Missy Cotter Smasal carrying Suffolk with 54.92% of the vote, compared to Republican Jen Kiggans’ 42.36%.
