We mourn the loss of Dr. David Jay Weinstein, age 87, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle, who died on September 12, 2024.  Born in Queens, New York on March 23, 1937, he was the son of the late Anne and Frank Weinstein.

David received his undergraduate degree, followed by his medical degree, from the University at Buffalo School of Medicine in 1964.  He completed a fellowship in Pediatric Surgery from Buffalo Children’s Hospital that same year, followed by his residency at Akron General Hospital in Ohio.

David served active duty in the United States Navy from 1965-1967, where he was stationed in Norfolk, Virginia, and then enlisted as a Reservist until his honorable discharge in 1970.  During his tenure, he served as a Lieutenant and Task Force Surgeon on the Pocono.  From there, he transitioned into emergency medicine and became one of the first emergency room physicians at DePaul Hospital in Norfolk.  Following his time in Norfolk, he moved to Suffolk where he went into private practice as a family physician, with successful offices in both Wakefield and Suffolk.  Concurrently, he was on staff at Louise Obici Memorial Hospital and served as the medical director for Waverly Health Care and Lake Prince Woods, both nursing care facilities.  Among his other professional accomplishments, he served as medical director of the Commonwealth of Virginia, a preceptor in Family Medicine at MCV and EVMS, and a delegate for the Medical Society of Virginia.  Additionally, he proudly served on the board of directors at Tidewater Occupational Center and was named a charter member of the American College of Emergency Physicians.

David is survived by his wife Anita Hargrave Weinstein, daughters Deanna Sue Becker (Andy), Julie Ann Krupnick (Tom), Dara Melissa Dunn, Stephanie Danielle Hechtkopf (Matt), Rebecca Sharon Schenk, Deborah Suzanne Perry (Newman), Chrystal Curl Rogers (Matt), and Brandee Renee Curl. He will also be missed by his grandchildren Brenna Laine Becker, Billy Daniel Dunn, Emma Sharon Schenk, Zachary Newman Perry, Jett Owen Perry, Harlow Rose Hechtkopf, Allie Grayce Rogers, Grayson Bernard Rogers, and Christopher Luke Bunn. He is also survived by his sister, Edith Steindler, and nieces Ellen Spear (Brad) and Amy Steindler Buemi (Dave), and great nephew, Ben Spear.

A celebration of life will take place on Sunday, October 13th, 2024- the family will receive visitors from 1-3pm, immediately followed by a funeral service, at R.W. Baker Funeral Home, 509 W. Washington Street, Suffolk, VA.
