Suffolk Fire and Rescue announced they and the Chesapeake Fire Department responded to the 3200 block of Bridge Rd. for smoke inside of a commercial building on Tuesday, Sept. 3.
SFR detailed that Emergency Communications dispatched the incident at 11:37 a.m. with Engine 25, Engine 5, Ladder 11, Medic 5 and Battalion 1 arriving at 11:43 a.m. where they found smoke inside a Food Lion grocery store. During investigation, Dominion Virginia Power identified a power outage occurring inside the 3800 block of Bridge Rd., causing “a phase to drop in the North Suffolk area.” Multiple SFR and CFD crews worked together to isolate the smoke that was “mostly contained to the rear of the business in the stock room area.”
At 1:33 p.m., crews isolated the cause of the smoke to the “main motor,” which burned in a large heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) unit that served the rear of the business. The store manager identified a HVAC contractor to provide HVAC repairs. Both a red tag was issued by SFR and the power was secured to the HVAC until repairs proceeded from the certified HVAC contractor. At 1:40 p.m., all employees returned to the store and no firefighters or citizens were injured. Responded units included Car 1, Car 10, Battalion 1, Engine 25, Engine 5, Engine 10, Engine 9, Chesapeake Engine 12, Ladder 6, Ladder 11, Ladder 3, Chesapeake Ladder 10, Rescue 1, Medic 5, Safety 1 and EMS 1.
