It is with deep sorrow we announce the passing of Mary Bessie Winslow Britt King on Monday, August 26, 2024, in her home in Suffolk surrounded by her family. Born on December 24, 1935, she was a strong presence in her family’s lives. She was a resilient spirit, loving mother, and compassionate grandmother. She was born to the late Bennie and Nina Stallings Winslow of Ryland, NC. Mary is predeceased by two husbands, Henry Augustus Britt and Ralph Butler King; eldest son Henry Lee Britt, grandson David Christopher Britt, and several siblings. She was 88 years old.

A lover of gardening, sewing, and canning, she is best known for her handmade dolls and her seasonal tradition of dressing as the Easter Bunny amidst her decorated gardens in the spring. She had many cherished friends both near and far, including the family from her late husband Ralph. Out of amusement, she was often heard saying her personal slogan “And I said ‘Well’…”. Mary was a natural caretaker to all blessed to have known her.

She is survived by her children: David W. Britt (Sandy), Faye E. Bright (Arthur), Bessie M. Mathias (Stewart), and daughter-in-law Ann F. Britt. She had eight grandchildren who referred to her affectionately as “Mamas”: Jessica Wiencek (Lawrence), Mary-Beth Britt, Henry Bright, Art Bright (Brittany), Tracy Noriega (Robbie), Tammy Durden (Willie), Christina Bradshaw (Robbie), Sara Mathias (T.J.). She had four great-grandchildren who she adored deeply:  Caroline Smith, Em Meade, Mary “Mae-Mae” Bradshaw, and Colton “Little Wayne” Durden. Mary is also survived by two sisters:  Axie Ree Fulcher and Anne Moore, who were close with her until her passing.
