New SPD Deputy Chief announced

The City of Suffolk has announced its new Deputy Chief selection for the Suffolk Police Department.

Chief of Police James “Danny” Buie announced the appointment of Major Jesse Epperson as the new Deputy Chief for the Suffolk Police Department, effective Wednesday, August 7.

A lifelong resident of Suffolk, Major Epperson joined the SPD team in July 2006. After his completion of Basic Law Enforcement training at Hampton Roads Criminal Justice Training Academy, Major Epperson has since seen service in various capacities within the department such as uniform patrol, both an investigator and sergeant with the Neighborhood Enforcement Team, Internal Affairs sergeant, Special Investigations Section lieutenant, captain of Operations – Precinct 1, and captain of Administration. Likewise, Major Epperson is also commander of the Underwater Search and Recovery Team and Honor Guard.

Major Epperson has received two supervisor of the year awards as well as departmental community service awards and several departmental commendations, along with other noteworthy awards. He also holds a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Troy University and a Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice from Old Dominion University. Likewise, Epperson graduated from the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police – Institute for Leadership in Changing Times and is a certified Law Enforcement Executive – Command Executive Officer through the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police.
