This past Wednesday saw the Suffolk Sheriff’s Office compete to help provide blood donation opportunities to Suffolk residents.

Sponsored and held at the Hilton Garden Inn Suffolk Riverfront, the Mayor’s Cup Blood Drive was held on Wednesday, June 5, with various residents coming out to donate blood for those in need. The cup, held in cities across Hampton Roads, including Hampton, Chesapeake, and Norfolk, Chief Deputy Maj. David Miles says that the goal of the competition is to “boost” the local blood supply this summer.

“The American Red Cross Mayor’s Cup runs until Aug. 31, 2024, aiming to gather enough blood for patients, especially during the summer donation decline,” Miles said. “The Suffolk Sheriff’s Office is supporting this crucial cause and giving Suffolk a chance to win the Mayor’s Cup Trophy. Remember, blood demand is constant, and your donation makes an immediate impact. Give the gift of life this summer.”

Miles says that it’s “rewarding” working with the American Red Cross to help provide blood donation opportunities for Suffolk.

“The organization ensures a steady blood supply for those in need, making a meaningful impact on the community by helping to save lives,” Miles said. “It is a privilege to collaborate with such a reputable organization for this important mission.”

American Red Cross Team Leader and CS3 Kim Morris talked about working with the Sheriff’s Department for the blood drive.

“Well, I think it’s awesome that they’re willing to come out to help us with the registration and canteen area and working with them side by side,” Morris said. 

Morris, a fellow blood donor herself, talked about her 23 years of work with the American Red Cross.

“We come in and we travel around to different locations and set up all of our equipment. We have scheduled donors come in and even some of those that are not scheduled, we do have the opportunity to take some walk-ins sometimes when they come in,” she said. “One pint of blood saves three lives. Very rewarding.”

Miles also noted that the Mayor Cup isn’t the only blood drive opportunity that residents can look forward to this year.

 “The next blood drive, known as the Battle of the Badges, is set for September 11th,” he said. “This event will be held at the Downtown Hilton Garden Inn, featuring the Suffolk Police Department and Suffolk Fire and Rescue.”
