A tractor-trailer carrying 50,000 pounds of peas overturned Friday, spilling the vegetables along I-66 in Fauquier County. According to Virginia State Police, the crash occurred at 8:10 a.m., when the tractor-trailer was traveling west on I-66. An unknown vehicle made an “unsafe lane change,” causing the tractor-trailer to run off the left side of the roadway, colliding with a guardrail, and overturned in the median. The tractor-trailer driver, a 54-year-old male from Suffolk, was not injured in the crash. He was wearing a seatbelt.
VDOT assisted with the cleanup that caused the westbound lanes to be closed for several hours.
The crash remains under investigation.
