The Nansemond-Suffolk Academy Lady Saints hosted the Cape Henry Lady Dolphins for the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools(TCIS) Championship on Friday afternoon. The Lady Saints dispatched Cape Henry 10-0 on the strength of TCIS Player of the Year Marin McGowan.
McGowan was near perfect in her five innings in the circle, walking one and giving up one hit while fanning 10.
A Sophia Grant RBI single in the second inning got the scoring off to a start. Rylea Nelms scored from second on the play. After Paige Meeks was hit by a pitch, Kayla Kosiorek tripled, scoring Grant and Meeks. Zoey Carpenter singled, finishing off the four-run inning.
Cape Henry held NSA off the base paths in the third but could not withstand the Lady Saints’ offensive pressure.
A six-run fourth sealed the 10-0 TCIS tournament win for NSA. Ellie Benes was named Tournament MVP for batting .833.
The win is the Lady Saints fourth straight at home, improving their record to 18-2-2 heading into the VISAA state tournament, where they hope to bring a fifth consecutive championship back to Suffolk.
