Helen Evans Lowe, a resident of the Village at Woods Edge in Franklin, VA, and a former longtime resident of the Great Fork community of Suffolk, died Wednesday, April 10, 2024. Mrs. Lowe was born on July 19, 1926, in the Rocky Hock community of Chowan County, NC. She was the youngest daughter of the late Zacharia Trotman and Effie Louise White Evans and raised in a loving family of twelve children. A graduate of Chowan High School and Coastal Business College in Norfolk, VA, she was employed by the Nansemond County School System and later with Colonial Farm Credit, both in Suffolk, VA. As a member of Rocky Hock Baptist Church, she met the love of her life, Hubert Lowe, as they sang in the choir together. They were married there on January 4, 1948. They moved to Suffolk, bought a farm, and started their family by joining Great Fork Baptist Church, where they were both members until their deaths. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Hubert Lowe; five sisters, Lillie Saunders, Lonie Harrell, Pearl Harrell, Beulah Williams, and Eleanor Byrum; and six brothers, Carey, Edward, Milton, Marvin, Roland, and Alvin Evans. Surviving are her children, Jerry Lowe (Susan) and Roseland Evans Lowe Worrell (Donald); four grandchildren, Justin Worrell (Lisa), Joshua Worrell (Jennifer), Jeremy Lowe (Krystn) and Michelle Myers (Chris); great grandchildren, Madison and Tyler Lowe, Ian Duffy, Kristen Miller, McKenna Myers, and Kaitlyn, Abigail, Cameron, and Chloe Worrell; and a great-great grandchild, Juniper Miller. Also surviving is a sister-in-law, Thelma Gray Lowe Goodwin of Edenton, NC; and over one hundred nieces and nephews. A Celebration of her Life will be held Thursday, April 18, 2024, at 1:30 pm in Great Fork Baptist Church. Friends may visit with the family in the fellowship hall immediately following the service. Mrs. Lowe, being a firm believer in giving back, donated her body to the Virginia State Anatomical Program with studies of the effects of Alzheimer’s on the brain. Contributions in her memory may be made to Great Fork Baptist Church, 180 Great Fork Road, Suffolk, VA 23438.
