George William Poston III, age 63, of Suffolk, Virginia, passed away Thursday, March 14, 2024. Born in Bluefield, West Virginia on February 15, 1961, George was an incredibly caring man who always put others first above himself. His benevolence was exemplified through his steady involvement in various positions in the Masonic Lodge, including Worshipful Master of McAlister 185, and his service as President of the Franklin Shrine Club. He was also very well-known for his outlandish pranks and corny dad jokes.
George carried with him throughout his life an avid passion for the outdoors. Among his favorite outdoor activities were fishing for crappie with his father at Lake Burnt Mills, sitting among the oak trees and the squirrels at the family hunting land, and hiking and camping across the U.S. with his beloved wife of 38 years, Debbie. He was also fond of taking long Sunday drives through the country with his family, which he assured them were simply just ‘short cuts’ to get home quicker.
George was a successful businessman, moving with his family to Raleigh, North Carolina in 1990 where he and Debbie started a well-respected tent rental company. George later partnered to create US Event Structures and most recently acquired Norfolk Tent – the company where he spent high school summers working as an installer and met Debbie. He cared deeply for all his employees over the years and sought to help them best he could.
George was predeceased by his sister, Anita Lynn Litton and is survived by his wife, Debbie; son and daughter-in-law, Geoff and Kathy; his beloved grandson, Brooks; father and mother, George and Maxine Poston; mother-in-law, Jean Steffens; and numerous sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, and grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
A celebration of George’s life will be held at 11AM on Saturday, March 23, 2024 at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home, 509 W. Washington St, Suffolk, VA. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to George’s beloved church, Somerton Friends Meeting, 5239 Quaker Dr., Suffolk, VA.
