A big fifth inning opened up a flurry of scoring Tuesday as the Hopewell Blue Devils defeated the Lakeland Cavaliers 14-2. Hopewell scored seven runs on four hits in the top of the fifth inning to take an 8-0 lead into the bottom half of the inning. Hopewell pitcher Demetrius Simms’s balk drove in the first run of the game for the Cavaliers, and a Landon Patton double scored the only other Cavelier run in the game.
Hopewell continued scoring in the top half of the sixth after a walk and hit batter put runners in scoring position. Then, a series of Cavalier errors allowed three more runs to score, Extending the Blue Devil lead to 11-2.
Cash Harrington opened the game for Lakeland, giving up two hits and five runs over four and one-third innings, striking out one and walking four. In the loss, Harrington threw 43 strikes on 79 pitches.
Simms allowed three hits and two runs over five innings with no strikeouts and walking three.
Carson Brinkley, Patton, and Cody Ricks collected one hit for the Cavaliers.
