Suffolk Va. –The Suffolk Police Department is slated for a virtual assessment by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) from March 29 through April 5, 2024, aiming to achieve re-accreditation in law enforcement by verifying its ongoing adherence to professional standards.
The accreditation program mandates compliance with state-of-the-art standards in policy and procedures, administration, operations, and support services. With approximately one hundred and sixty-three standards to adhere to, containing over three hundred bulleted sub-standards, the Suffolk Police Department maintains its accredited status.
During the virtual assessment, both agency employees and community members are encouraged to provide feedback to CALEA and their assessors regarding the Suffolk Police Department.
CALEA has established an online portal to receive citizen comments, accessible via the Suffolk Police Department’s website or directly through CALEA’s site.
To uphold transparency with the community, the Suffolk Police Department makes the standards assessed by CALEA available for review at its Headquarters. Accreditation lasts four years, during which annual reports must attest to continued compliance. Enrollment in the CALEA Accreditation process is voluntary, reflecting the department’s commitment to Suffolk citizens.
A link to the portal can be found on the Suffolk Police Department’s website on the home page of www.suffolkpd.com under the heading of CALEA. For those that choose to go directly to CALEA’s site the link of https://cimrs2.calea.org/476 is an option. For this virtual assessment, there will be no in-person public comment period offered by CALEA.
